We know that the brain controls the activity of many of our organs, but did you know that the gut, specifically the gut microbiome, can affect the brain?
This bidirectional link is known as the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
A key recent paper by Needham et al studied a microbiota-derived compound (4EPS) and how it affects the cells of the brain. Specifically, they describe how increased 4EPS can enter the brain and disrupt myelination patterns in mice, having potential implications on conditions like multiple sclerosis and behavioural disruptions.
This caught my attention, as the precursor to 4EPS is 4EP, a volatile metabolite that is within our Breath Biopsy VOC Atlas.

I am delighted to announce that our latest paper at Owlstone Medical has been published Metabolomics.
Titled "Progress and Challenges of Developing Volatile Metabolites from Exhaled Breath as a Biomarker Platform," this review highlights advancements and addresses methodological challenges, like standardization, crucial for translating breath VOC biomarkers into clinical practice.
The paper offers actionable steps to enhance current and future breath research, ensuring the successful development of VOCs as reliable biomarkers. It also critically examines recent key papers that have advanced breath research.
