Social mobility is about creating a fairer, more equitable society. As custodians of business, boards have an important role to play in ensuring that our businesses reflect the communities we serve.
New research from KPMG UK Board Leadership Centre shows that despite over half of FTSE 100 companies stating that socio-economic background is a key consideration when recruiting new board members, only one publishes socio-economic background data for board members in their annual report.
From our research and conversations with peers – it’s clear that boards recognise the benefits socio-economic diversity brings to delivering long term, sustainable growth. However some struggle with measurement and reporting, especially when operating across geographies. There’s no question that it is a complex, nuanced and emotive topic, but the first step is for boards to understand their position and identify barriers. The report outlines practical ways to do this.
