Cycling can lead to a greater purpose. St. Augustine University recently created the first collegiate cycling team in a Historically Black University. Inspired by Major Taylor, the first black American world champion in any sport, St. Augustine's cycling team set out to prove however large or small our differences may be, a few committed people uniting on shared values can change the world.
Professor Mark Janus and Dean Van Sapp at St. Augustine's Business School helped a few students (including a 400m track and field Olympian) to follow their recently discovered passion for cycling by creating cyclocross team starting from absolutely nothing. We support this team as part of the inclusion and diversity pledge we made in May 2020. Since then, we have worked with Bicycling Magazine, SRAM, ZIPP, Stages, Fizik, and others to rally support for this team with equipment. We will be following their first year by producing a video series that shows them go from learning to handle the bike to racing against major US universities (Duke / Wake Forest / UNC / etc).
