It's time we declare a state of emergency, our childcare infrastructure has failed, with no sustainable solution in sight.

So what's happening?

  • Childcare cost is so damn high, even families who live in Brooklyn and make $400K per annum can no longer afford care locally.

  • Low wages for child care employees who essentially provide care so 60% of the country can work and contribute to the economy.

  • Low quality care. Because the wages are so low, childcare employees typically do not come with the experience needed to effectively support children, leaving parents apprehensive. Many (esp. mothers) eventually quit their job, to stay home.

And why does this keep happening you ask? It's because we don't value care or care workers. We fundamentally believe that mothers will do this work for free.

Mothers, not fathers, have had to cut back their work hours, moved jobs to have more flexibility to work remotely or stared in disbelief at budgeting spreadsheets that showed well over half — and in some cases nearly all — of their monthly take-home pay going to babysitters or day care centers.

Well, there we have it. And how do you expect a black woman who doesn’t look attractive to a white man to raise money.
