Thank you to Thansettakij for the newspaper feature sharing our perspective on super apps. At Appsynth we’ve supported strategy and implementation for several regional super apps and believe these are the 7 critical factors for success:
1️⃣ Dominant Core Offering: Early Chinese super apps addressed previously unmet user needs, enabling rapid growth for core offerings before expanding. Building an all-encompassing super app today in a mature market like Thailand is nearly impossible, but businesses that dominate a sector can feasibly expand to adjacent services based on their core offering.
2️⃣ High-Frequency Services: Super apps use a ‘hook and expand’ strategy—starting with low-cost, high-frequency services and later cross-promoting lower-frequency, higher-margin ones. Thai apps with well-established daily-use habits are the best positioned to make this expansion.
3️⃣ Clear Focus: Aspiring super apps should first align on their definition of this broadly-used term, then outline a clear vision of what it means to their business. Nowadays going deep to become the definitive super app in a particular vertical may be more fruitful than going broad.
4️⃣ Consumer Trust: Trust around data security and a provider’s overall reputation are critical factors influencing super app adoption. Therefore genuine super app contenders in Thailand will be companies you already know, and likely platforms you already use.
5️⃣ Partner Ecosystem: While some super apps like Grab operate the majority of services in-house, most rely on third-party integrations for expanded offerings. Consolidating all corporate group offerings is a good first step, but eventually opening out ecosystems to trusted partners will accelerate growth further.
6️⃣ Mini-App Governance: Effective governance of mini-apps is critical, including data sharing, integration and approval processes. Governance is a trade-off between control and flexibility, so companies need to align on their preferred operating model and architecture to support that.
7️⃣ Robust Technology: Defining a super app vision is one thing, but execution is another. Ensuring scalability, security, ease of integration, effective data usage and an intuitive UX are some of the challenges. The more users engage with a super app, the better it can serve them through personalised experiences. The right technology is crucial to realise this vision.

#Techsauce2024: it's a wrap! Huge thanks to my team for being on their feet for 3 days spreading the good word about Appsynth and all we do. Here are my top takeaways from the event:
- While everyone is talking about Large Language Models (LLMs), Small Language Models (SLMs) can be a more efficient option for enterprises performing specific tasks that require a more limited but specialised knowledge pool [Cr. K.Sam Tanskul]
- Thailand needs its own AI models to protect its "Thainess" (ความเป็นไทย). Representing local insights, cultural nuances, regional dialects, Thai-specific use cases and local regulatory compliance won't be priorities for generalised Western offerings. Local models like Typhoon enable Thai people to shape the AI that will increasingly influence the lives of everyone [Cr. K.Kasima Tharnpipitchai]
- In wealth management, AI will enhance not replace analysts. With the contextual landscape in constant flux - including geopolitics, economic forces and regulatory change - human interpretation is still essential. AI empowers analysts to go broader and deeper, but creating content that has an opinion and elicits an emotional response still needs a human touch [Cr. K. Nattapon Chansivanon]
- The future of Fintech will be driven through partnerships and integrations. For financial service providers, distribution through intermediaries (open finance) will be a key driver of future growth. This also provides easier access to those who've traditionally been underserved, helping to democratise access to insurance, credit and other financial services.
- Similarly in the AI ecosystem, collaboration is key right now. Firms can't be great at everything, so partnerships are essential and knowledge sharing around use cases and technical challenges can help drive the whole industry forward [Cr. K.Tee Vachiramon]
- Individuals don't want to over-rely on AI for things they're already skilled at, in order to keep those 'muscles' active. Many people struggle with mental arithmetic after becoming reliant on calculators, and the same may apply to skills like coding and reliance on AI. #techsauceglobalsummit #TSGS2024
