So I've been an AE for almost 3 weeks now. Going great so far!

I work mostly with SMBs. Technically speaking, it's "transactional" Sales. I'm trying not to let the "transactional" creep into my attitude, but it's just that most deals take 2 meetings, tops.

All my prior experience in "closing" roles was with MidMarket+. And there's something awesome about having a short sales cycle - you learn faster.

You come up with a new idea, try it out 10 times, compare it with a "focus group" and toss it away - all within 1 week. It'd take months to do the same in Enterprise or IT Service Sales.

Enterprise Sales is cool and I want to try it out one day. But if you're still early in your career, transactional sales is the best thing you can do for your long-term growth.

Lots of things could've gone differently for me if I reversed the order of companies in my employment history.

It took me 8 years to become an AE.

I always wanted this exact role but always ended up either in adjacent roles, or close to it, or even above it - never an AE.

I quit my first SDR job because I was passed for AE promotion.

Then there was a super-lean startup where I'd become an AE if it took off, but it didn't so I was mainly prospecting there until it went bust.

Then I was a Partner Account Manager. It was 50% admin work, 30% partner calls and 20% client-facing time... The 20% that I loved the most and where I excelled the most. At the end of my last financial year in that role, I was going to approach the Direct Sales Team Lead and discuss my transition to his team.

But I guess it would've been too easy, so what I did instead was accept an offer from a start-up again (a much better-funded one this time). The job was to build the Sales function from the ground up - I was so flattered to be given such a challenge.

When I got fired for poor performance (not gonna deny it), I had 6 years in Sales and a bunch of cool logos under my belt. I'm sure I could pick any company in Ukraine, just walk in there and get the darned role.

But I guess it would've been too easy, so I thought: "Wouldn't it be nice to become an AE in a cool American SaaS?".

(We have a bunch of cool companies here in Ukraine. But I always thought of the US as the NBA of Sales. There are other leagues and competitions, both in basketball and Sales... But it's just a whole different league. Quality-wise, opportunities-wise, salary-wise 🤑 Running ahead of myself - it didn't disappoint me).

Of course, it would be nice! - though I. That required downshifting to an SDR again and I was fine with that.

2 years later, Circle finally announced an internal AE hire. I spent countless after-work and weekend hours preparing for it... But ended up falling short in a mock demo 😔

At long last, all the stars aligned last week. I'm fortunate that Circle needed even more AEs as it's growing like crazy (doubling revenue each year for 3 years in a row and counting). I was preparing all the time between the 2 mock demos and finally nailed it.

When I say the stars aligned, I mean a lot of stars. A caring team. The leadership I trust. The product I love. It feels so good that it was worth the whole journey. And the opportunities are jaw-dropping.

It was a Bo show for the whole of last week. I never heard so many shout-outs in my life...

So let it be the last round, cause I can't wait to sell some Circle!!!
