Highlights
“I don’t want Black Ballad to be in the events business”
I said this to Tobi Oredein in 2015, when i was enamoured by the idea of exclusively digital products.
Of course, I have long since changed my mind. Many of my fondest memories of BB have been laughing, joking, learning from and supporting black women at our events.
But nothing could have prepared me for the Black Ballad Weekender. We set out to create the ultimate lifestyle experience for black women to celebrate our 10th birthday. The path to creating it was one of the hardest professional challenges we’ve ever had.
But as we closed the doors on Saturday night, I knew that we had created something special for our audience. I’m extremely proud of Jendella Benson & Tobi Oredein and thankful to Mori Abdul, Florence Adepoju & Naomi Michaels for working with us to build our first attempt at a flagship event.
Whether we do it again is a conversation for another day. But regardless of what we do next, I’m glad we made our mark on the event business.
Apple Intelligence is the best consumer application of AI we've seen so far.
Yesterday at WWDC, Apple announced Apple Intelligence, its new AI system, bringing a revamped Siri that can finally complete complex tasks, writing and image creation superpowers, customised emoji & more, to people using their newest devices.
Before today, many had said Apple was behind in the AI wars. And they were right. Apple Intelligence doesn't have the most powerful models. The examples the company used are, in isolation, on the lower end of technical sophistication. Apple even kicks your questions out to ChatGPT to answer questions not based on information on your phone.
And it is actually the right strategy. We don't need iPhones that can code us a whole new website from scratch, or have access to all of the world's information to hand. The extent to which AI is going to go mainstream, will be based on how AI quickly helps everyday people, get every day things done. And that is what Apple Intelligence proposes to do better than anyone else, because our devices know more about us than any other platform or AI company.
If there is one thing Apple has done with Apple Intelligence, it is show that building for, as Ethan Mollick describes it, "Personalised Interactivity At Scale", rather than the most powerful or knowledge models, is the way to think about innovating with AI.
