Bonnie Tsui, born in 1977, is an American author and journalist of Hong Kong descent.1 She was born in New York, New York, and raised on Long Island.14 Currently, she lives in Berkeley, California.1
Tsui is a longtime contributor to The New York Times and many other publications.2 Her bestselling book Why We Swim was published by Algonquin Books and has been translated into ten languages.2 A cultural and scientific exploration of our human relationship with water and swimming, it was excerpted in The New York Times Sunday Review, and has received praise from The New York Times Book Review.2
Tsui attended Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude in English and American Literature and Language.4 She also studied at the University of Sydney and wrote for The Sydney Morning Herald, and won a Radcliffe Traveling Fellowship to New Zealand.4
Tsui's book, American Chinatown: A People’s History of Five Neighborhoods, was published in 2009 and won the 2009-2010 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature.1 Tsui also published a memoir, Why We Swim, in 2020, and a children's book, Sarah & the Big Wave, in 2021.1 She is a member of the San Francisco Writers Grotto.1 Tsui is a consultant for the Hulu television series Interior Chinatown.2
