The secret to building #thriving teams:

It's not about having the best individuals.

It's not about micromanaging every step.

It's not even about having the perfect plan.

It's about creating an environment where everyone feels valued.

Where everyone plays to their strengths.

Where everyone has the same goal.

That's where the magic happens.

And that's how you build a thriving team.

So, next time you're leading a group of people, remember:

  • Establish a clear goal
  • Empower people to use their strengths
  • Make sure everyone feels valued and know they are contributing to the team.

Watch things fall into place.

When stupidity prevails... 🤦‍♂️ (rant alert).

I don't think I've ever posted an opinion about a policy on social media, but what we're doing in Slovenia right now is just too much.

This is a Slovenian thing, but I'm deliberately writing in English, so that others don't make the same mistakes.

What is this about?

In Slovenia from Monday we have a new law obliging companies and all employees to have detailed records of working time, time of coming to and leaving from work, breaks, etc. I won't go into details here, but most of the companies (and even employees) are outraged.

I agree. We went from an already too prescriptive law and just turned the volume up to 100.

The more I read about it the less sense I see in it.

I understand that the idea of the law is to prevent fraud and taking advantage of workers by ill-intentioned employers, but...    ...to me it sounds kinda like prescribing everyone to be equipped in full scuba-diver gear whenever they use Google Maps to navigate in their car, because of that one person who followed the GPS into the lake.

(BTW, that really happened. Link in the comments.)

And I don't see the government mandating scuba gear in the car. 🤷

While I see many reasons why what we are doing is a really bad idea (and not a single one that makes sense) there is one reason above all that makes this outright dangerous.

🎯 One of the most important Slovenian goals is raising productivity (value added per employee) of our economy.

--> if you want people to be more productive, you want them more engaged.

--> last time I checked, one of the core drivers of high engagement of people was autonomy. Having agency over our lives.

What we are doing is dramatically reducing agency. The government says they want to ensure people get the rest they deserve, so they can be more productive.

Hell, why not make us track and report every day to the government when we go to bed and when we wake up, to ensure we get the 8 hours of sleep we need to be productive.

(Tough luck to parents, whose babies and toddlers didn't get the memo. 🤯 Or is it just my kids? 🤷)

I firmly believe that a thriving workplace is what we are after if we want more productivity.  ✅ We want people who are accountable for their lives, their work and their results.  ✅ We want people who want to grow and contribute to something greater than themselves.  ✅ We want people who can recognize when they need to rest and employers who trust them to take the break when they need it.

❌ We DON'T want people who need the government to tell them how much break they need to take without any regard to "modern" ways of working (remote, hybrid, digital nomads, etc.).

(Rant mode off.)

P.S. I am allowing for a chance that I'm wrong about this and would love to be enlightened by someone smarter than me as to how exactly is this law going to help us be more productive as a nation. Seriously, I'd love to hear your take on this. I hope to god I'm wrong.
