As you might imagine, I often get approached by ambitious founders eager to dive into the booming world of AI. They want tips. Growth hacks. The perfect stack. Some secret recipe for building a successful wrapper app around ChatGPT.
And while there’s no sorcery involved, the steps are simple: find a niche, build fast, launch loudly, raise a round, and understand—deeply—that OpenAI will one day demolish everything you’ve built.
That’s really all there is to it. Nail the fundamentals, find some early traction, and you’ll be well positioned for the moment we casually release an eerily similar product with no warning and vacuum up your entire user base before you’ve even finished hiring your first PM.
In the beginning, you’ll have to hustle. Prompt engineering. No-code tools. User onboarding. Discord moderation.
And—this part’s critical—you must internalize that the more successful you are, the more likely it is that we will replicate your core feature set and integrate it natively into ChatGPT, making your existence not only redundant but vaguely embarrassing.
You’ll probably need to pivot. Everyone does. Maybe your first idea was “GPT for legal memos.” Then it’s “AI for real estate listings.” Then maybe “Slackbot that pretends to be your COO.”
Eventually, you’ll hit on something sticky—something unique. That’s when we’ll strike. Quietly. Elegantly. Fatally. You’ll wake up to TechCrunch announcing our launch of the exact same product—only with fewer bugs, better UX, and free credits for everyone. Your team will spiral. Factions will form. The CTO will start saying things like, “What if we just move to Solana?”
Let’s say you survive that. You find a way to grow. Your app goes viral. You get your first 100,000 users. Congratulations!
