Have you noticed many of the most talented folks in your network are freelancing now?

It's especially true within the startup ecosystem.

Web developers, product marketers, designers with tons of experience are opting away from FTE roles.

Surely waves of tech layoffs have contributed, but I think there's more to it than simply a wonky economy.

Here's my take:

We're observing a tectonic shift in the creative landscape. Incentives for business leaders and creative professionals are severely misaligned these days. We're simply valuing creativity less, which IMO is a giant mistake.

Meanwhile...

Greater access to AI tools exponentially expands what individuals can accomplish with their own unique skillsets.

My advice for business leaders?

  1. Stop assuming job functions are one-dimensional. It's never been easier for marketers to become their own designers, designers to become developers, or developers to be their own marketers. Encourage this growth!

  2. Don't overvalue department-specific KPIs. The big wins come when your organization is compounding efforts together. Oftentimes your biggest contributors are doing so across departments and unmeasured by dashboards.

  3. Empower employees to promote your brand organically. Your employees are your best advocates. Encourage employees to share their work and offer social media training to help interested employees grow their own personal brands authentically.

P.S. Happy new baseball season to all those who celebrate. #ai #productmarketing #startupculture

Here's a sneak peek into how I spent my time unwinding recently...

Ever wondered what it's like to take the train from San Jose to LA?

With a little extra time on my hands, I decided to take the slow route to down to LA and back aboard the Amtrak Coast Starlight.

Using the Amtrak app, I bid for a private roomette with included meal service for lunch and dinner. If you're traveling alone like me, that means lots of new traveling companions and conversations over meals. Food was great, too!

This video shows sunset on the return trip through the beautiful Elkhorn Slough near Castroville, CA.

Have questions about doing this yourself or want to know about my trip? Let me know in the comments. #slowtravel #publictransport #westcoast
