Highlights

An insanely busy week, which all seemed normal as it was happening. Only when you slow down and take a breath that you realise what happened.

Monday: Took part as a investor in the Experience the Investor session of EnterpriseTech STAR, organised by Dr Rebecca Myers and Olivia Cutmore. Played Good Cop, Bad Cop, Terrible Cop, Worse Cop, Even Worse Cop with Jason Mellad, Rob Woodman, Tony Kouzarides, Edward Rayner and Prashant Shah. Great pitches from young, energetic, entrepreneurial individuals.

Tuesday: Board Meeting at the Milner Therapeutics Consortium, followed by lunch with a property developer looking to secure a site for more lab and office space. Demonstrating the continuing demand for this sort of thing in Cambridge. Topped off with the BioSpark Demo Day, organised by Tony Kouzarides and @Stephanie Avraamides. Even more great pitches from young, energetic, entrepreneurial individuals.

Wednesday: The truly amazing Cambridge Wide Open Day, organised by Prashant Shah and Sunil Shah. Great opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues. Gave a talk on what larger pharma look for in biotech partnerships. Standing room only (although it was a small room). Even had Apprentice Winner Ricky Martin tell me he enjoyed my talk (I can now die a happy man). Also managed to gate crash the excellent round table discussion by Duncan Young.

Thursday: Creative Disruption event run by Agile Leaders Graham Combe and Tony Sedgwick. Great insight from David Brown, Hannah Sore and Michael Dabrowski among others. Facilitated an impromptu workshop on investing.

Friday: Taking stock, writing LinkedIn posts and answering e mails that have been piling up all week.

Take away message: The energy, enthusiasm and optimism in the life science sector is incredible. Not just from the new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, but also from us who have been around for a while. When the recovery happens (and it is coming), the industry will be bigger, better and bolder than ever before.

I'll be on a panel, discussing 'The Pharma's View: Are deals with Big Pharma becoming faster, more collaborative, and more creative or just more complicated?' at next week's Pharma Partnering Summit. See you there perhaps.
