Did you hire too many executives?

This is something that a lot of founders talk about privately. Over the past few years, it was considered good to bring in a bunch of impressive execs.

The theory was that getting the top execs helped lock in top talent, which would enable the company to corner the market.

Companies were given more money than they needed and told to spend it, so they overhired.

According to a Ycombinator jobs report, ‘The number of jobs on our platform exploded in 2021 with 7,300 jobs posted. That was 4.5x growth from the prior year, and 10x from when we started.’

A large headcount used to be something to brag about, people used to infer that a large team meant you must be successful.

The narrative shifted in 2022 when the tech market corrected and now profitability and being lean are seen as desirable traits in startups.   The fact that startups need less money than previously thought is an exciting idea to a lot of founders.

My favorite period was when team size was < 25 people who all enjoyed each other’s company. I plan to try and keep any future company I work on below this size if possible.

This is also good for progress in general. If you need fewer people per startup, it means we will have a lot more startups.

Observation - Gen X leaders are more against remote work than Millennials and Gen Z leaders are.

This makes sense because many Gen X (or older) leaders became successful when in-office work was the default.

Of the early-stage founders I've talked to, 90%+ are either remote or hybrid, and 90%+ of those are Millennials or Gen Z.

I've done partially remote since 2012 and fully remote since 2020. As an introvert, this has been amazing for my productivity and happiness.

I expect remote work to continue to increase over time, as the % of the workforce that became successful after 2020 increases.
