Highlights
I'm excited to join a great team in my next role as Head of Finance at ProjectManager!
Long read warning.
I remember studying unemployment in macroecon and my professor describing the rate of unemployment not in terms of total jobs and available workers, but in terms of the time it takes for workers to settle into the RIGHT job and the time it takes employers to attract the RIGHT employees. The idea that both parties are trying to represent their value relative to each party and the time it takes before they connect in the right role/offer is feeling relevant to my job search over the last months.
In particular, I've been exploring what my value really is and which roles utilize my skills and experience best. This has been far more challenging than I expected in ways I really didn't anticipate. After all, landing a job is all just about showing the results of your effort and nailing the interview, right?
The problem I've found in my story has nothing to do with the success I've had, but the non-linear career path itself. Take a look at a summary of the roles I've had by industry and strategic challenge below. What exactly is the role that best fits that resume?
I'm proud of the work I've done and the experience I've gained. I think it's a testament to my work rate, attitude, capability, and skill that I can deliver value on such audacious challenges no matter the role or industry. I think my skills and resume fit a ton of roles varying from finance to go-to-market roles.
However, I'm also learning not everyone evaluates my career the same way I do and to become more attractive I need to simplify my career and cater my story for the role in question. For example, if I am looking at Bus Dev roles for a software company they probably don't care about my time as CFO of a manufacturing company. Seems simple enough!
The hard part is taking away any of my story feels like diminishing my value. This comes back to unemployment as a measure of time. I'm still trying to define my value, determine how I want to focus, and IDEALLY also find the employer who values my entire journey even if the role at hand doesn't need every skill or experience I have in my repertoire.
At the end of the day, I delight at solving complex problems and this is just one more opportunity to practice the craft :)
