Last night I had the honor of speaking to Grant Son Sports Entrepreneurship class at Columbia University in the City of New York. While I shared a bit about Swoopt and its future plans, my main goal was to peel back the curtain on what building a company is actually like (at least in my own experience). Here were the 3 lessons I shared:

  1. Success is not measured by fundraising amounts. --> Don't get caught up in the headlines and measure your own progress against other companies. You never know the full story. Every venture fund under the sun who says "we invest at the earliest stages starting with just an idea" aren’t giving you the full story. This pretty much only applies if you are a repeat founder with an exit. We can’t wait to show them that they made a mistake, but that’s why you always bet on yourself. And this leads me to my second lesson...

  2. Just get started; product is paramount. --> One of my biggest regrets to date is pulling the website last July with the intention of rebuilding and launching later that year with our API partners. It's now May 2022 and still have not released our product to the public. In fact, this was the main reason why we were unable to raise a recent round. There is a delicate balance between just releasing something and it being good enough that customers come back. We have struggled to find this balance, but we finally appear to be coming out the other end of the tunnel.

  3. It is harder and lonelier than I ever anticipated. --> I am very open about my struggles and mental health. I speak to a therapist almost every other week. I have a great group of friends and advisors as well who help me stay grounded and motivated. I have had weeks where 4 out of 5 days I am depressed and question everything. Should I be doing this? When do I throw in the towel? Should I get a full-time job and put this on pause? There is no easy answer other than you just need to keep pushing. Everyday is another opportunity to progress the company, no matter how small of an impact it is.

The reality is it's a roller coaster of extreme highs and extreme lows. We thought we were hot stuff after winning the startup competition at Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. A humbling lesson in "your yesterday's news". We learned this the hard way with countless rejections from just about every venture found we pitched. Rejection sucks at every level, but there are lessons to be learned that come along with it. These lessons are what will enable us to be successful in our future efforts.

I am not an overnight success story, heck I am not even a success story at all. But I believe in Swoopt and it's mission and I am not ready to throw in the towel. The fight is just about to start.

It had long been a goal of mine to attend the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (SSAC). This weekend I got the opportunity of a lifetime to pitch Swoopt in front of a panel of judges at the Microsoft Startup Competition held at SSAC. It was a dream come true and honor to have competed alongside some of the most groundbreaking young companies within the industry.

However, not only did we pitch, but we won the whole thing, taking home 1st place. We have a lot left to accomplish, including bringing our product to market, but it was beyond rewarding to see industry leaders and entrepreneurs share in our vision.

Thank you to my dedicated team and advisors that have gotten us here, none of this is possible without you all: Schuyler Hoversten Doug Schaer Grant Son Dinn Mann Katie Weeks Ari Shaposhnik Dean Keinan
