Highlights
Welcome to Sitka, Alaska, a place as extraordinary as it is pristine. Nestled among the rugged landscapes and protected by the ocean, Sitka is more than just a small island community it’s a tight-knit family where everyone knows each other’s name. Here, fishing, hunting, and sports, especially basketball, are not just hobbies but a way of life, “shaping our days and connecting us deeply.”
Meet Mike and Crystal, two individuals whose paths embody the spirit of Sitka. Mike, hailing from an industrial town in Pittsburgh, found his calling amidst Alaska’s wild allure and the promise of adventure. His journey led him here, to Sitka.
Crystal, a proud member of the Tlingit tribe, brings her heritage to life through art. Her vision to adorn Sitka’s basketball courts with Tlingit-inspired designs speaks volumes about preserving culture and community pride. Together with PROJECT BACKBOARD and 5 Star Basketball their collaboration transforms a simple court into a vibrant canvas, celebrating Tlingit traditions and fostering a sense of belonging for all who step foot on it.
Their story isn’t just about basketball or art; it’s about resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of Alaska. Through rain or shine, they persevered, turning challenges into triumphs and inspiring everyone around them. This documentary is a testament to their dedication, showing how sports and creativity can bridge cultures and generations, reminding us of the power of unity and heritage.

This was a 2 year production with 4 trips up to Sitka, Alaska. I am grateful for the opportunity to shoot and Co Direct this piece with the Project Backboard team.
I can’t wait to return to Sitka to help them continue to build their basketball community this summer!

Thank you, AP, for the nod
The opportunity to create and build a basketball school featured by NBA75 is something I could have never planned or imagined for myself when I stopped playing basketball in 2015. The "Bus Driver" was merely a nickname that symbolized my journey as a content creator, exploring a new side away from basketball. Now, seeing my bus featured and immortalized by the NBA is a surreal honor. I was more than happy to donate the bus to Hoop Bus Inc.
Remember, you truly have no power over the journey you're on. Never forget you are always in and a part of the process.
