I continue to be dismayed by the number of Christians (and a large swathe of Americans) who refuse to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a Christian, and an individual who works for a health care system, I am heartbroken by Governor Abbott’s decision to rescind Texas’ statewide mask mandate.
Though hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients have declined in Texas, the state still maintains an average of 200 deaths daily due to COVID-19. Measures like social distancing, wearing masks, and the COVID-19 vaccine have helped limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, but with less than 20% of the state vaccinated, this decision to rescind the mask mandate will not only limit “progress” towards recovery, but will lead to the suffering of many. To quote the Mayor of San Antonio, “you don’t cut off your parachute, just because you’ve slowed your dissent.”
Wearing a mask is more than a matter of individual consequences, it’s a decision that impacts everyone around you. By definition, wearing a mask equals loving your neighbor.
