Brendan Kennedy

Associate Professor at The University of Western Australia

Brendan Kennedy is a Professor in the School of Engineering at The University of Western Australia and Head of BRITElab at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.13 He received his PhD in Optical Communications from Dublin City University in 2006, focusing on nonlinear polarization rotation in semiconductor optical amplifiers.1

Kennedy's research primarily focuses on developing novel optical imaging techniques, particularly optical coherence tomography and optical elastography, with applications in mechanobiology, tissue engineering, and surgery.13 He has published extensively, with over 90 peer-reviewed journal papers, 15 book chapters, and 1 book.1 His work has earned him several awards, including a West Australian 40under40 Award in 2019.1

In addition to his academic roles, Kennedy co-founded OncoRes Medical and served as its Chief Scientific Officer from 2017 to 2021.1 He is also a Senior Member of Optica and an Editorial Board Member for Biomedical Optics Express.1

Kennedy's research has contributed to the development of micro-elastography, a method to measure tissue's micro-scale stiffness, with applications in intraoperative tumor margin detection in breast cancer.2 His work spans various fields, including biomaterials, airway physiology, and convergent approaches to research at UWA.2
