I often wonder how much fear holds back an industry. But I don't mean it in the traditional sense.

Usually people think about fear from the perspective of fear of doing something different, fear of jumping into a new challenge.

But I tend to look at things from an industry-wide scenario - what does a healthy multifamily industry look like overall?

And in that way, a healthy industry means free-flowing information which propels us all forward. We often get that when we collaborate, either on social networks or in person.

But there is one thing that I think holds back that free flow of information: Fear.

This is especially true the higher up people go on the career ladder. Those who are green don't necessarily want to look foolish, but it's also expected that they shouldn't know most things.

But once someone gets into the executive ranks, the fear of looking stupid becomes compounded, and that results in people becoming more tight-lipped.

The reality is that we need to feel comfortable in asking supposedly "dumb" questions.

We should have a culture of placing less importance on what someone "should" know at a certain level, and embrace those asking questions who put themselves out there.

The reality is that every single person has knowledge gaps, and we should all encourage those to fill those gaps, even if the question seems silly, or if the person asking should supposedly know it already.

That is how we accelerate the industry, in my opinion.

Great conversations at RETCON - Real Estate Technology Conference. Actually had trouble narrowing down these few highlights, as I could have easily focused on several others, such as data normalization. Will be publishing a piece or two in the coming days on Multifamily insiders.
