Highlights
I have retired and am going to take a break, but this industry is way too amazing to not bring me back in some intriguing way. Stay tuned.
34 years, 8 months, and 25 days is a long time. Reagan was president, Springsteen was middle-aged, and GM had about forty percent market share (really!). That was how long I worked for OSAT/CAR. However, I retired from CAR on of April 5. The Center for Automotive Research has been an important part of my life. Through many iterations, our commitment to the mission has remained core to the organization. I have worked with many remarkable people over the past 34 years. Those people cared about helping our partners and our people. The value of working there was never financial. The real value was found in knowing that our work was respected and in the relationships with both fellow CAR staff and industry partners. CAR, at its best, offered a unique value proposition to the employees and its stakeholders.
As the organization goes through a change in business models, it felt like the right time to move on. I wish the new team nothing but the best. They are inheriting a remarkable brand.
But in the meantime…
I want to thank Don Smith for having the foresight to invite Dave Cole to the UM Management Briefing Seminars in the early 1970s (to talk about the Wankel Rotary Engine)! And Dave for leveraging that with the remarkable vision to start a research group on campus that brought together different disciplines long before it was cool. I also want to thank Dave Andrea for hiring me and encouraging a love of the industry. Thanks also to Sean McAlinden and Mike Flynn for teaching me what research is, and that two Irishmen should not work together.
Wendy Barhydt and Lisa Hart were the heart and soul of the best automotive conference in the world. They were also the best—plain and simple. And thanks to Jay Baron who guided CAR through the Great Recession and taught my kids the importance of stashing a chocolate chip cookie in your pocket in case of an avalanche—a lesson they still adhere to every time they ski.
And, for those that don’t know, Diana Douglas, Deb Gable and Denise Zilch held the place together.
A special thanks to Kristin Dziczek, Richard Wallace, Kim Hill, Greg Schroeder and Bernard Swiecki for being the best Automoitve Research group around. We didn’t always agree, but we took care of each other and did amazing work. It was fun, even if it didn’t always seem like it!
Thanks to Carla Bailo for coming onboard during a difficult transition and to Brian Esterberg—the best damn sales guy I ever met—who took the affiliates program to places it had never been.
Finally, thanks to Julia Bush, Edgar Faler and Narges Lahiji. You represent what made CAR great.
