Brian Ferris is a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google, working on transportation and urban-mobility features for Google Maps.1 He has been with Google since August 2011, based in the Greater Seattle Area.1

Ferris holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, which he completed between 2004 and 2011.1 During his doctoral research, he focused on improving the usability of public transit and founded the OneBusAway project (http://onebusaway.org).1 Prior to his Ph.D., he earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from North Carolina State University (1999-2004).1

In January 2024, Ferris mentioned that he had worked on initial research explorations at Google that eventually became Project Green Light, which uses AI to help improve traffic flow in cities.2

Ferris is known for his contributions to transit technology. He is the original creator of OneBusAway, a popular transit app, and has continued to be involved in transit-related projects and discussions even after joining Google.3
