Initial posts touch on (1) my dissertation on Negro Leagues baseball; (2) "building a second brain" using a tool called Obsidian; (3) the potential of generative AI to enhance moral inquiry; and (4) the limitations of common career frameworks that imply a dichotomy between an individual and society.
Why Ghost and Obsidian? First, I want to retain control of my written body of work in the coming decades. Second, I want to use that control to make my writing broadly accessible. Third, I want for that access to enable an inclusive and systematic conversation on a wide range of issues.
Thus, as the website evolves over time from a blog to a platform for collective inquiry, I hope to inspire others to build better conversations in their own lives--which will, in turn, re-enrich my own efforts.
In the coming weeks, I will also share more about other projects under the Collaborative Moral Inquiry umbrella. In the meantime, a huge thanks to my collaborators (you know who you are) for all of the support to date!
I am delighted to join the board of Constellation Stage & Screen, which seeks to "produce world-class theater and film that impacts the national performing arts industry through new work development."
My road to Constellation began in the mid-1990s, when the song "When I Was a Lad" in H.M.S. Pinafore prompted young Brian to wonder, "Wait, is THAT how the world works?" (Answer: All too often.)
Not a day goes by without reflecting on moments of inspiration, puzzlement, and connection supplied over the years by artists. I have also become more attuned to threats--financial, social, and sometimes even regulatory--faced by artists and arts organizations. It is a privilege to work towards a future that properly values (in all senses of the word) these activities.
Constellation was formed in 2022 through a merger of the Bloomington Playwrights Project, Cardinal Stage, and Pigasus Institute. The resulting page-to-stage-to-screen pipeline honors the legacy of these organizations while also unlocking new possibilities as a combined entity.
