Just a rant, but you might dig it.

I am a husband, father, employer,... and I try to just be an all-around good human. I read, research and observe things around me and use that information to make moves and inform my decisions.

I went down an internet rabbit hole the other day, and a lot of it was centered around happiness and depression. So many people in our society struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, sadness, etc.

I am not happy all the time. I would actually say I'm not happy most of the time. From moment to moment there is discomfort, the needs of others, general stress and almost constant work. How could anyone be happy?

Here is my conclusion,... we aren't meant to be happy. Through every age of humans since the beginning of time people have had to deal with discomfort, the needs of others, general stress and almost constant work (and the constant threat of death depending on the time).

Look at pictures from 100 years ago. No one is smiling. Everyone looks beaten down and worn out. Its because they were. Life was way harder 100 years ago. People didn't have to just get up and go to work everyday. They had to get up and struggle. Struggle in everything.

So, 100 years later, we are living in the most comfortable time in the history of civilization, and so many people are unhappy. I think we have lost the notion of what happiness is. There is so much media out there that is focused on happiness, wellness, health. We are trying so hard to be happy that we are all miserable.

So what is happiness? For the last few generations we have been fed this idea of happiness in the form of pleasure, entertainment and material things. Those are all short-term and not guaranteed. Theodore Roosevelt said, "Comparison is the thief of joy." With social media and the information age people are constantly comparing themselves to others. They have more. They do more. They live more. I'm sorry but its all a lie. We are not meant to be happy in that sense. What, are we all Roman Emperors now!?

In my business we have many days that are extremely frustrating. We often run into problems that completely derail our plans and we struggle to overcome obstacles all day. At the end of the day my team and I have been beating our heads against the wall for 8 hours. We are tired, sweaty, dirty and often bleeding. Embrace the suck and find the funny is our mantra.

The pay off is when you step back, and look at what you've done, and it looks awesome. There are fist bumps all around and it was a good day. We are happy. There is no comparison. It's just us and what we have been able to accomplish. It doesn't matter that it was 1% of the day. It was still a good day.

I haven't had a real vacation in years. I don't have a lot of expensive things. I have a fairly stressful life. But am I happy? I have a healthy family, roof over my head, food to eat, safety and contentment. It beats 100 years ago.

Grindin! One day last week I spent 6.5 hours in the car, drove 126 miles and visited with 22 customers and prospects. It was time well spent and resulted in a few of those prospects already soon to be converted to clients.

I'm sure many of you do this everyday and I would love to hear some stats! Put down the challenge. I need continued inspiration!
