Last week I had the pleasure to deliver a talk on “Improvisational Leadership - Grace at the edge of chaos” to the top 120 leaders at Stahl. In this talk we looked at how we can be more inclusive leaders when making decisions in the face of complexity, ambiguity and paradox.

As leaders, we aspire to adhere as best we can to the formal strategic plans devised by our organisation. Nevertheless, the intricate uncertainties of the twenty-first century, compounded by heightened stress levels, compel many of us to engage in spontaneous decision-making and improvisation when confronted with new challenges. Despite being unintentional, this ad-hoc approach in business occurs frequently, often as much as 75% of the time, as noted by Meyer (2010) and Mintzberg (1973). Unfortunately, such impromptu decision-making is often ineffective, primarily due to leaders struggling to think clearly amid elevated stress levels.

What many people don’t realise, is that there is a practice for effectively making spontaneous decisions in the face of complexity, ambiguity and paradox - called Improvisational Leadership. This discipline was born in the theatre, but in the 1990s was adopted by schools such Yale, MIT and Harvard for teaching leadership. You can find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dsYCbHy2

I had the pleasure of introducing leadership at Stahl to this exciting methodology using fun, interactive and physical exercises that had everyone on their feet moving and playing with intention.  #inclusiveleadership #diversityandinclusion #speaker #performingideas #improvisation #chaos

Thanks to Michele Taraschi, EMBA, Dalia Vallejo, Maarten Heijbroek, Michael Costello, for the invitation to speak, to Châteauform' for the beautiful location and to my team at Performing Ideas for all the support

Is Apple Going in the Right Direction?

Most of us look to Apple as pioneers in digital transformation  and technological advances.

The iPhone revolutionised how we communicate on all levels. The iPod how we selected the music we listened to. The iMac added a new dimension to how we chose to work and make a style-statement.

It become more than just a tool, it became a tribe. #Android or #Apple?

Advances in AI and Virtual Reality are over taking science fiction in some areas. And with the latest VR eye tool from Apple, as a communications expert, I am left wondering if Apple are taking us in the right direction this time.

From birth, eye contact is how we connect and communicate with one another. It’s how we transmit messages without needing to utter a single word.

I’m trying to see (no pun intended) how artificial projections of people’s eyes onto VR goggles can be a way of making a meaningful connection that helps get our message across in a meeting or presentation.

It is the same for the app that puts fake eyes on your image in a Zoom meeting. Where’s the human connection? Where is that shared moment?

Perhaps I’m wrong and that for the shy, introverts this all feels like a dream finally come true.

Yet try as I might, I can’t help coming back full circle and asking: wouldn’t it be more meaningful if we did a little bit of work on practising really looking people in the eye when we want to communicate with them?

Wouldn’t we be creating a more connected, authentic society if we just took off the VR goggles and looked one another in the eyes?
