Conference Connections Matter.

It's been seven years since I attended the MPI Great Lakes Conference in Kalamazoo, MI.  Since then, I have attended dozens of conferences of all sizes and formats, but the one in Kalamazoo stands out.

One of my favorite memories from the conference was how ✨ Deborah Gardner CEO, CMP, CVP ✨ helped curate the speaker panel and created a fantastic environment for the speakers to align their messaging across the entire event.

We had a number of pre-calls to get to know each other as speakers. Yes, they were conference calls. It was 2017, the dark ages of web conferencing.  But Deborah took it a step further.  Since this was an industry conference, most speakers were beyond giving their talk; they were there to network.

Deborah made a concerted effort to ask the speakers to attend the entire conference and participate outside their sessions.  She also encouraged us to get to know the content of the other speakers so we could reference each other across the sessions.

It was a special conference; in nearly all the sessions I attended, the speakers referenced one another speaker's content and how it interconnected with their message.  I can remember this guy in the picture Kevin Coffey giving me a shout-out from the main stage,

Kevin and I connected during the opening reception and discussed meeting room security by chance. Okay, Kevin speaks on travel safety, so that is not a big surprise, but I shared with him a common risk I see for event planners who bring their own AV equipment: they need a strategy for locking down their equipment.  Although we prefer to provide a full-service solution, managing that risk, customers do sometimes provide some equipment, to which I always prompt them to ensure they have lockdowns for their high-value items like projectors and laptops.  Kevin loved the tip and shared it from the main stage during his session.

Since then, Kevin and I have become great friends.  We regularly send each other ideas, leads, and industry news.  We also compare industry event calendars and make sure we connect in person.  He still gives me shout-outs from the stage at different events.

I am on target to connect with Kevin 3x this year in person, a random speaker from an event in 2017.  Okay, nobody calls Kevin random :).

I share this story because it's easy to take an event for granted and go through the motions.  Even if you don't have the benefit of Deborah Gardner curating and connecting, be intentional about your event experience. It really is an opportunity to develop lifelong connections.

By the way, how did I know Deborah?  I attended a pre-conference workshop she presented at the MPI MACE Conference around 2016.

Tag a few people you met at a conference who are now a big part of your life.

Countdown to Kevin texting me; thanks for the shout-out from the LinkedIn Stage.

Quote of The Day:

“A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word on paper.” - E.B. White

Hint of The Day:

This applies to most things worthwhile in life.  Waiting on ideal conditions is the leading cause of regret.

Prove me right!
