Highlights
Happy Thanksgiving!
I feel very thankful for my family, friends, clients, health and my dog (Ginger). Ginger brings us so much joy and reminds me to be in the moment.
This year in particular I am not taking for granted that I have a home, that we feel safe where we live, have access to food and healthcare, and that my children have access to quality education.
Today, we are the beneficiaries of so many incredible advancements in technology, biotech/healthcare, space, transportation, software, communications and many others. Most of these discoveries have made our lives easier and more abundant than ever.
In just the past 70 years life expectancy has increased by approximately ten years! These advancements are incredible and give me tremendous hope for the future.
Despite wars, poverty, inequality, political unrest, climate change, etc. we should be grateful for being alive during this time in history. We can make a positive impact in the course of history by being resourceful and compassionate, acting locally or globally.
One of the ways to impart positive change and express gratitude is by being charitable. Giving back by either donating your time or by making charitable donations are great ways to give thanks.
There isn’t a shortage of causes requiring support, and a financial advisor can help you strategize your budget for donations and tax deductions.
I’d like to highlight a few charities that I am personally supporting this year:
American Friends of Learners in Kenya - This charity run by friends in Darien, CT provides food and education to children ages 3-12 in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Many of these children wouldn't otherwise have a meal let alone have any chance of learning.
Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) Ukraine - TAPS is a charity that is run by my friend Whitney Tilson. Whitney has raised over $15m for ambulances and other medical and humanitarian supplies to support the Ukrainian people.
International Rescue Committee (IRC) - The IRC helps help people affected by humanitarian crises to survive, recover and rebuild.
I will be sending out a note shortly that details how to maximize your charitable impact and your tax benefits.
In the meantime, enjoy a day celebrating the abundance in your life.
Wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.
With Gratitude, Brian

It certainly was an interesting time to sit down with John Bolton, the former US Ambassador to the UN and US National Security advisor under President Trump. Bolton held national security positions under both Bush Presidents and served as Assistant Attorney General under Reagan. He has decades of foreign policy experience at the highest levels. He has met with Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping, Angela Merkel, Benjamin Netanyahu and many other global leaders.
What is happening geopolitically now has huge implications for the economy and markets today and in the future.
The terrible events that unfolded in Israel and now in Gaza this week are the result of a web of religious, economic and territorial disputes that date back decades. These issues had largely been kept at bay and had shown signs of improvement. In fact, the US was close to brokering a deal that would normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Now all of this has been thrown into question.
Bolton's views on the geopolitical front:
-
The US needs to take a stronger, clearer stance with both our allies and adversaries.
-
The world looks to the US for leadership and any sign of weakness will be viewed opportunistically.
-
It is too early to tell if the conflict in Israel will create a broader regional conflict.
-
It is likely that the potential deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia was the catalyst that spurred the attack by Hamas.
-
Iran likely has a bigger role in the attacks than we perceive them to have at this point.
-
Bolton advocates increasing US defense spending to 5% of GDP, where it was under Reagan. Today it stands at 3%.
-
Bolton is on Iran's most wanted list and was the subject of an assassination attempt in retaliation for the US killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
There is a lot to unpack here. I pray for peace in the region.
As a final note, as we were heading to the elevator, he made a comment implying his concern about Trump winning the presidency in 2024!
Thank you to 10 East for organizing and the #YaleClubNYC for hosting.
