Charlemagne once said, “To have a second language is to possess a second soul.”

But whether you're a student or executive, living in a new country and speaking a new language is a terrifying and lonely prospect – you don't yet belong to your new world, but you also feel different when you return to your home country. Every day is unfamiliar territory.

Who can you turn to for support? How can we reframe this challenge? I chose this as the topic of my first TEDx talk:

I was thinking of my good friends, mentors and former colleagues who are building careers and leading vibrant lives across global borders and continue to empower, teach, and coach others through these transitions:

  • Isa Buencamino-Agbayani who launched Women of the World (WOW)
  • Katrina Too who mentors and coaches for 500 Global
  • Sam Jeong building UWC-inspired campus in Vietnam
  • Anthony Leung global innovation strategy expert
  • Bizhou W. cultural insights researcher
  • Kateryna Lyplyava mindfulness and mindset coach
  • Li Zhang global leadership development expert
  • Emily Tan Yi Lyn education strategy consultant
  • Jay Wang communication coach (and improv comedian!)
  • Greg Carlson leadership coach and facilitator
  • Charles Iannuzzi largest provider of online degree programs for China

After years of navigating multiple languages, I now get to help schools, families, and executives break down cultural barriers and build deeper connections. Language learning is a journey – the awkwardness, the confusion, and then finally a breakthrough moment with your taxi driver – It's these moments of connection that humanize us and make us come alive.

I'm grateful I now get to help schools, families, and executives to navigate beyond cultural barriers. And very lucky that my former colleague and friend Grace Junling X. have been collaborating on this TEDx production around the theme of "新视界“ ”Seeing with a fresh pair of eyes."

Blown away by the dedication of the Malvern College Qingdao! Bravo and a huge thank you to this team and their 6 months of incredible work.

Meeting the students, faculty, parents, volunteers, animators, and even some of my kids from Whittle was so special. Also, importantly, Qingdao is such a vibe (and the food highly underrated).
