State of Payments Report for 2024 - by Marqeta

This study is based on consumer research in the UK, US and Australia by our processor partner Marqeta, here are some interesting figures:

📲 Mobile Wallets

• Mobile wallet adoption is consistent across all 3 markets, with 56% of consumers having used one in the last 90 days and 96% of consumers having at least 1 card in their mobile wallet (55% have 1 or 2). • 62% of consumers feel comfortable enough to leave their physical wallets at home (I can't remember the last time I took mine out!). • 49% of 18-34 year olds feel uncomfortable paying with cash. • Key takeaway: Still room for growth of digital payment methods and having a compelling card offering is an important differentiator.

🕹️ The Opportunity for New Financial Service Players

• 63% of US consumers (aged 18-34) say they would get financial services products from non-traditional providers (e.g. tech companies, social media companies and retailers). Illustrates a merging of personal and financial lives. • Tech companies are viewed as the most appealing option, with trust in the brand one of the main drivers. • Key takeaway: There's an opportunity for large non-FS brands to step into this space but they need to communicate a compelling story and can use consumer data to develop it.

🏦 Digital Banking

• 34% of consumers use a digital-only bank in addition to their primary bank. • Whilst 92% of consumers feel their primary bank offers a good range of core banking services, for credit cards and peer to peer payment methods they are looking elsewhere. • Just 17% of consumers said they had visited a bank branch in the past week. • Key takeaway: Consumers are looking for a frictionless experience in all areas of their financial services lives and are happy to blend traditional and non-traditional options in order to get it.

The overall takeaway is that we’re in the middle of a massive transition in how consumers interact with money. Consumers are more open than ever to embedded financial services, P2P apps, and other modern financial tools. And success in evolving brands into trusted financial services providers starts with maintaining flexibility and agility in meeting consumers’ needs, at every part of the money lifecycle.
