My first contribution to a Lonely Planet guidebook is now on shelves!

I first visited Ashland about ten years ago, not long after moving from New York City to Portland. Many road trips followed. Southern Oregon has since become one of my favorite places to visit. So it was very exciting to get to write the Ashland and Southern Oregon section for the new edition.

Working on this guidebook and revisiting parts of a region I've now called home for nearly a decade made me fall in love (again) with the work of trying to capture a place with words. It's an honor to think that I might contribute to readers' trips, to encourage them to consider the history, changing climates, and the experiences that can bring a place to life.

I got to do all of that thanks to Lonely Planet's reimagining of what a guidebook can be with these new editions. If you're someone who has many dog-eared, road-stained Lonely Planets from past adventures, I think you're really going to like how these latest versions have evolved.

I'll be digging into this book myself for recommendations from the other wonderful writers who worked on it. And I have a feeling I'll be planning more road trips, soon.

As a writer who's spent much of my career scrambling for work and stories in the chaotic world of freelancing, career changes are often on my mind.

I've seriously considered going back to school for physical therapy or nursing. I once enrolled in a program that introduces women to a variety of trade work; maybe I'd become a construction worker or an electrician. Getting away from my computer always sounds nice.

There are so many career temptations—people doing all kinds of work, walking professional paths that fork this way and that. I wonder about many of them. And then I get to write a story like this one, writing about a few of those winding career paths, and I suppose I'm on the right one. Because as tempting as it is to change careers, I love bringing this variety of life choices to the page, more than anything else.

So I hope you'll check out my article for Reed Magazine on career changes, on the challenges and rewards of going after what feels right. And I'd love to hear about yours! Have you made or considered a hard pivot at work?
