Most of my friends don’t know what I do for work. Hell, my parents still don’t understand. Am I a recruiter? Sure, sometimes - but most of the time, I work in Recruiting Operations.

This function didn’t exist when I first got into it. Slowly, my talent leaders recognized we needed someone to help build a referral program, help with a GH <> WD integration. We need a process for internal mobility, we need offer letter updates or 22 entirely new offer letters for X country that we’ll soon be operating in. We need dashboards, audits, reports, QBRs, enablement!!! Oh, the trainings - how to use new tools, interviewing 101, benefits training and so. many. more. Vendor management, stakeholder management, XFN partnerships with legal, people ops, finance, L&D… the list goes on! I once referred to this function as the kitchen sink of the recruiting team. We are IT, analysts, therapists and your biggest cheerleaders.

If you don’t have a recruiting ops function on your team, you need one. Yesterday, Karen Ly was impacted by Brex’s layoffs. I know I speak for many when I say she was the oil that kept our recruiting engine going. She did so with a growth mindset, a strong sense of ownership, a positive attitude and a true sense of urgency. She gets it and while I hate starting work today without her, I am so excited for the humans that get to start working with her in the future. She is irreplaceable. Hire Karen, she’s on the market, but not for long.
