I ❤️ my clients! Had the wonderful opportunity to help Keep Texas Beautiful bridge a staffing gap this summer. Besides loving their mission, I really enjoyed working with their team to keep the messaging consistent during this interim period.
I have been lucky to work with some clients for 5,6,7+ years and some for shorter stints like this one. If you know an organization searching for short term, longer term or project-based solutions, I am here to help! Thanks to Lara for the kind words and for working hard to keep Texas beautiful!
Today, my twin daughters turn 16 years old. I couldn’t be prouder of their strength, perseverance, and work ethic. Although I wouldn't normally share this on LinkedIn, today has me feeling very nostalgic and thinking about my life and work all those years ago.
Having three kids under the age of three and working was difficult. In fact, it is the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. I think back to where I was financially and professionally at the time and will forever be grateful to my colleagues for the unbelievable support I received during my three months of bed rest leading up to their birth and the two months that followed. I created a short list of things that helped me the most all those years ago.
Diapers My colleagues hosted me a diaper shower. Newborns go through up to 10 diapers a day. (20 for twins). The team gave us enough diapers to cover almost the first three months, saving us hundreds of dollars and keeping us from having to run to the store with three littles in tow. This was truly a lifesaver.
Meal delivery For the first six weeks, the team created a meal delivery train. You heard that right - SIX WEEKS! At a time when I could barely keep my eyes open from exhaustion, I didn't have the energy to cook or the ability to leave the house to shop. They didn’t leave out my 2 ½-year-old son either. There was always a special something for him to eat, too.
Flexibility when I returned At the time, the maternity leave policy was pretty light. To be fair, the organization was small, and more time away is now becoming more of a priority in the American workplace, so no fault to them. However, to be honest, I do get a little jealous when I hear the maternity/paternity leave plans from larger companies. I had to return to work at eight weeks postpartum. My husband got two days off, and he had to use his PTO. This meant daycare for two infants and a toddler. Every parent knows daycare means your kid will be sick on a regular basis. Multiply this by three, and I was out a lot those first few months. I also had to leave early to get to the daycare in time before closing. My manager, Jeff Manning, was always so supportive. I’m still grateful 16 years later.
I’m sure there were more things I missed, but these are the top three. What was most valuable to you during your mat/pat leave? What did your return to work plan look like? I'm so curious!
