Anyone have strong opinions either way about the "Startup Multiplier Effect"?

The economic development concept is based on the idea that each startup creates multiple startups in the future. Successful exits should give equity team members more runway, confidence, and credibility to take a chance on a startup of their own. Even failed startups may inspire team members to create something better/different of their own.

An example in Michigan is Duo Security creating 85 millionaires in their exit (many of which remain in Michigan). It's still early, but it will be interesting to watch the ripple/multiplier effect. A very informal evaluation (LinkedIn search) shows about 55 former Duo Security employees founded something.

I'm curious to hear:

  • Do you think it's a viable economic development strategy to bet on the multiplier effect?
  • When/where does it work and when/where does it not work?
  • What are alternative strategies that should be explored?
  • Have you found a good longitudinal study on the model?

I've heard people praise the model and others doubt the model. Your thoughts?
