The way we approach uncertainty defines us. Thank you Northeastern University College of Engineering for giving me the opportunity to reflect on this as your commencement speaker. It was an honor! #graduation2023 #commencement #uncertainty #futureofwork #engineering

Yesterday, more than a thousand people gathered on Boston Common to unveil The Embrace, a massive bronze sculpture depicting the moment when Coretta Scott and Martin Luther King Jr celebrated his Nobel Peace Prize. The monument envelops you as you walk into their hug–and as you take in the names of 69 civil rights leaders, some still living including my 98 year old Cambridge neighbor Melvin Gilmore, whose bronze plaques radiate from The Embrace. The memorial reminds us of the people who formed the movement for justice that came before us and that we are all called to join. Change comes because we come together to demand it. Change comes because we come together to create it.

Just as we gasped in awe as The Embrace was unveiled, watching Embrace Boston’s Executive Director, Imari Paris Jeffries, ignite imaginations in the lead up to this moment has been a breathtaking experience. In Imari, this city has a leader who truly operates from a place of love. Imari’s style is to call people in, set a bigger table, inspire with vision and data, express joy, relish laughter, and share the credit always.

The installation of The Embrace has gravity on so many dimensions–centering a commitment to dismantling structural racism within America’s oldest public park, doing it in community, and with a leader at the helm who knows that leading with love is the best way to grow the circle and reach for change. This is only just the beginning. #community #change #leaders #love
