Ok - I agree - the photo isn’t great, but the conversation with Rebecca Jackson, Rebecca Rodgers and Emily O'Brien certainly was.
One of the topics was on the back of Rebecca Jackson’s session at the Digital Workplace Conference yesterday on ‘inclusive meetings’. As we prepare for our upcoming Viva Engage Festival Rebecca suggested that we on the registration form ask if we need to cater for and specific accessibility needs. By asking upfront we can much better do our preparations. That’s such a terrific idea and easy to implement.

How can we make virtual events and meetings more inclusive? Rebecca Jackson is the IT product owner for collaboration at Avanade Australia is very passionate about this and gives us loads of great practical tips. First, she presented a set of people-related considerations:
- Privacy (eg camera on/off etc)
- Accessibility
- Language/translation
- Safety (eg events with kids, or people sharing inappropriate content)
- Diverse representation of participants
- Timing and time zones
Neat practical hints for M365 users:
- PowerPoint - ensure the Accessiblity ribbon is activated and run the checker. It will tell you how to improve the presentation.
- Use “ask me anything” feature in Viva Engage to get people involved before and after the event
- Check settings in the meeting set up. Do you want to turn off chat, disable cameras etc etc?. Features are often updated so check before every meeting.
- Try out rehearsal coach in PowerPoint. Will review your content and spoken word for diversity, filler words and lots more.
- Consider using the ‘cameo’ mode when presenting so your face is shown on the slides as you speak.
- Do try PowerPoint Live, especially for those who are working on single screens, so you can better control what you share.
- Interactive polls have improved greatly. Use them for getting feedback.
Terrific session Rebecca!
