Caitlin Dickerson is an award-winning investigative reporter and feature writer for The Atlantic magazine.13 She won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting for her September 2022 cover story, "'We Need to Take Away Children,'" which examined the Trump administration's policy of separating migrant children from their parents.53

Dickerson's career in journalism spans over a decade, during which she has received numerous accolades, including a Peabody Award, Edward R. Murrow Award, Livingston Award, and Silvers-Dudley Prize.3 Before joining The Atlantic in 2021, she worked as a reporter for The New York Times for nearly five years and as a producer and investigative reporter for NPR for five years.31

Her reporting focuses on immigration, history, politics, and race, covering stories across four continents and dozens of American cities.2 Some of her notable work includes:

  1. An 18-month investigation into family separations by the Trump administration.2
  2. Reporting on Polish solidarity with Ukrainian refugees.2
  3. Exploring the historical biases in U.S. immigration policies.2

Dickerson is currently writing a book for Random House about the systemic impact of deportation on American society.23 She has also served as a Shorenstein Center Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, an Emerson Collective Fellow, and a New America fellow.3

Dickerson's journey into journalism began unexpectedly.
