For over 60 years, it was “If it’s not Boeing, I’m not going.”

Now? I’m checking my flight info in 2024 thinking, “Please don’t be a Boeing!”

Curiosity got the best of me, so I dug into what went wrong. A lot, as it turns out. Accounting overshadowed engineering, self-preservation beat out transparency, and short-term profits took priority over long-term outcomes. It’s the classic story of decay, it happened gradually then suddenly (shout out Hemingway).

The linchpin that allowed all of the above corporate character flaws to be revealed? IMO - A focus on competition became their decision making paradigm. It’s easy to get caught up in what the other guy is doing. It seems important. business is like highlander, right? there can only be one! Ironically, when you start making decisions based on what your competitors are up to, you’ve probably dooming yourself to lose.

Take Boeing as the cautionary tale that they are. They became solely focused on keeping up with Airbus in a race to fuel efficiency. Where past versions of the company had prolonged production cycles to ensure safety, Boeing now pushed the 737 MAX out the door, even when it wasn’t fully ready to meet delivery requirements dictated by Airbus. The result? Two tragic crashes, hundreds of lives lost, and a massive blow to Boeing’s reputation (which is actually what their product is). Funny how fuel efficiency isn’t in the headlines. It’s not what we think about as passengers when we break out in a sweat stepping onto a Southwest flight after standing in line with a group C ticket. I hope I get there safe. It’s pass/fail.

Worrying about what your competitors are doing is rarely accretive—it’s just a distraction.

So, instead of getting sucked into the competition trap, let’s focus on what we do best. Let’s prioritize the things that actually make a difference to our customers and our people. Because at the end of the day, there is no race between us and our competitors—it’s us vs us. It’s about always doing the right thing next time, but just a little bit better than us last time.

Cheers!

Are there any other Tooth Fairies out there really feeling the sting of inflation?
