After 5 long years, it is my last day as a Special Adviser in government.

Working alongside some brilliant SpAds, junior ministers and the team at CCHQ, it has been the greatest privilege imaginable serving a Prime Minister, four Cabinet ministers, and latterly the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Thank you to Sir Jake Berry, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Boris Johnson, Sir Alok Sharma, Kwasi Kwarteng, and, of course, Jeremy Hunt.

I could not be more grateful to the hundreds of civil servants I have worked with since 2019. We have battled through a series of brutal global shocks - from a once in a lifetime pandemic to a 1970s-style energy crisis, then onto managing the economic fallout back home. Politicians and their advisers come and go, but these guys keep the show on the road.

Thank you also to the many businesses, charities, lobby groups and academics I’ve worked with in that time. The job of government is hard, often managing competing interests and disappointing many in the process. But the advice, challenge and expertise you receive from those outside Whitehall makes the job just that little easier.

Lastly, our friends in the British press. Rowdy, relentless and at times infuriating, yes, but we shouldn’t wish for anything else. A free press strengthens our democracy, and we are all the better for it. Sadly, billions can’t say that.

That said, I certainly won’t miss the 5am calls, the white knuckle ride waiting for the front pages to drop, or the bear pit that is post-Budget Lobby…
