We’re fortunate at Torch to work with exceptional coaches and employees from the LGBTQIA+ community. This has been on my mind in the last few weeks as we celebrate Pride Month, while at the same time monitoring deeply upsetting headlines about human rights violations and concerning legislation relating to the queer community. It’s already hard for this community to feel safe being out at work because of the prejudices that exist. It seems that current legislation in this country and abroad will make things worse.
Creating a sense of belonging for everyone who works for you is one of the most powerful things a leader can do. Although leaders play a huge part in creating inclusive environments, it can be especially difficult during times when our broader society is doing the opposite. But this is exactly why it is so important for leaders to be vocal champions of LGBTQIA+ rights.
At Torch, we make it explicit that LGBTQIA+ folks are not only welcome but appreciated for who they are. Many of our best workers are gay, trans or queer. I can not imagine a work day without them in our daily huddles. Torch will be a company that will continue to thrive because of these folks. For all of you out there who identify as LGBTQIA+, we appreciate you and we respect you! You make our workplace more strategic, more engaging and more enjoyable everyday.
