Highlights
Do we actually want an expert? Or just someone who is just more experienced than us? 🤔
Trick question… because etymologically, they’re the same thing. Expert comes from the Latin expertus or experiri, meaning ‘experience’ or ‘try’.
The title of expert seems to have become synonymous with ‘all knowing’. Someone with complete knowledge.
But actually, I don’t want support from someone who thinks they have complete knowledge. I want support from a TRUE expert. Someone who is more experienced than me. Further along the journey than me. Has tried things, and is willing to try things.
This week my partner and I met with a fantastic behavioural trainer, who is supporting us in training our 6 month old rescue puppy 🐶🐾
We thought for months that our girl was afraid of our van, after we’d tried (what felt like) EVERYTHING to get her in it.
One hour with an ‘expert’ showed us:
🧠 We were reading the situation wrong: turns out she’s not scared of the van at all, she has a threshold issue. She’s just nervous of initially crossing a new threshold. Complete mindset shift.
💡There is a simple fix: a training progression we could repeat and measure progress on. Learning and action. Action and learning.
Within two days we had a confident puppy jumping in the van for new adventures. It was such a small adjustment really, but the value of our trainer’s experience was SO GREAT we actually did a little cry-dance in our courtyard. So much was made possible for our little family.
Of course, it really got me thinking about good content.
Our buyers could be intimidated by expertise as it’s (so often) marketed. Asking THE INDUSTRY’S TOP EXPERT for help might actually seem intimidating and out of reach for the majority of people. Not to mention come with obvious cost associations.
Instead, discovering someone has:
👉seen this situation before 👉experienced this problem many times 👉tried different things to solve it 👉found a solution that works 👉provided life-changing results from sometimes the smallest changes or habits 👉 is STILL willing to learn more and try more to make the solution even better and more applicable.
That’s what fosters trust. That’s what I would (and do) happily throw my money at 💰
P.s puppy pic for the algorithm. Hi Mila!
It has been 1 month since we welcomed a 4 month rescue puppy into our home.
I’ve been as silent on LinkedIn as I have with most social outlets outside of our little unit.
I think I’ve been through every emotion on the chart in the last month. I won’t be doing any baby Vs puppy comparisons (because frankly, I’m not qualified to speak on it) but raising a puppy from a less-than-happy upbringing is hard graft, not to be underestimated.
A month on from Mila’s gotcha day and I can see how much real progress we’ve made. I’m on my way to London to spend time with a few of the PF team (in person!) and that time was unthinkable only 2 weeks ago.
Sitting on the train with a moment to reflect, this experience has been one of the biggest and most confirming tests of my 2 personal values: wholeheartedness and exploration.
There were some truly difficult days where I wished for someone to pop over and please please please take her back. But she is a decision I made with a whole heart, and wholeheartedness means I’m all in. It simply wouldn’t match who I am to give up. Wholeheartedness, to me, doesn’t mean not knowing when to quit. It means not quitting on a whim. Not quitting in a hard moment. It’s a deep exploration and wholehearted attempt first.
Cue exploration. I live to explore - places, humanity, ideas, theories. At the end of a TV show I will be that person who googles so extensively I could choose it as my Mastermind topic. And when I tell you we have been DEEP in Dora the Explorer mode with this little baby. Constantly curious: what is this experience like from her point of view? What is behind this behaviour? What does she need in this moment? What past experience might have shaped the way she feels about this?
I’m grateful to We are PF for lots of things. Inspiring us to consider and choose our personal values is just one of them. I talk to accountants about their values a lot, and help them verbalise them. This has reinforced even more for me just how important it is to know these heart and soul things about yourself (or your business) so you can back up your gut feel decisions.
Values are everything. Brene Brown has a great list of values words if you’d like to start thinking about your own 2. I’ll drop it in the comments.
And if you take nothing else from this post…cute dog innit? 😍
