Highlights
The pandemic is an immediate crisis with likely enduring repercussions. For one, the physical health crisis is inevitably spawning a financial health crisis – and exposing the fragility of household budgets from contract employment and cheap credit.
Hopefully, therefore, one good thing that could result from the crisis is we take more seriously the idea that the core purpose of banks should be to help their customers to live financially healthy lives.
This hasn’t been such a radical idea, recently – but the responses from banks have perhaps ranged from the frivolous (“savings goals”, “spend tracking tools” etc.) to the paternalistic (“financial health checks”, “financial education” etc.). Implicit in these responses is that financial ill-health is the result of consumers’ indiscipline and ignorance.
What banks haven’t focused sufficiently on is how their products fall short of actually providing the practical services to manage a financially healthy lifestyle.
We propose here 16 product / service innovations that would re-set how banks serve their customers to enable healthy household finances.
