✈️ Exactly one month ago I started pilot training! A lot of people were surprised by the news, including my family! While being a pilot was something I dreamed of in elementary school, it remained a silent and (almost) forsaken dream. Aviation careers aren't ever discussed as an option in low-income Asian communities, so it seemed impossible for a short, Vietnamese girl from an immigrant family to become a pilot......until now!

Leaving my role at Alaska Airlines and uprooting my life to Oregon for flight training was a difficult but life-changing decision. While I had been working towards my CSR role for the last 10 years, I had dreamed of being a pilot since I was about 10 years old! I'm incredibly grateful to Alaska Airlines' Ascend Academy for giving me the opportunity to follow my forgotten childhood dream; to my previous leaders - Diana Birkett Rakow, David Tucker, Marilyn Romano - for taking a chance on me last year and supporting my transition; to all the inspirational female pilots - Kim Gabrelcik, Kat Pullis, Kisa Wiley - who showed me you really can do it all; and my family, friends, and mentors who make my dreams possible.

If you'd like to follow my journey, please find me on Instagram @velvetflights (content pending 😁). I hope to expose more people to aviation careers so there will never be another Vietnamese/Asian girl who feels the need to silence her dream!

✈️ "In life, you are either the passenger or pilot. It's your choice." If you have the opportunity to follow a forgotten dream or passion, I hope you do! #studentpilot #lifelonglearner
