Every Sunday, the Charter newsletter rounds up the best advice we've seen that week for managing yourself and your team. Hands down, my favorite tip from this past week's is Coinbase's "delete week": In an internal memo, CEO Brian Armstrong encouraged workers to take a hard look at their own work and get rid of any unnecessary meetings, trainings, practices, policies, even Slack channels that are no longer serving them.

"Companies, just like any organization, trend toward complexity over time because it's easier to add something than delete it," he wrote. Especially in this time of year, when everyone is buzzing with new things they want to add to their plates, it's worth remembering that subtraction can also be a worthy resolution.

Want to try a version of it yourself? My colleague Michelle Peng wrote a detailed guide for Charter Pro members on how to do a meeting reset:

The Charter newsletter next week is a list of resolutions for creating more connected workplaces, pulled from our favorite insights from the past year on building relationships and trust between colleagues. Helping to put it together reminded me of one of my favorite things I've learned in 2023, courtesy of IDEO's Michelle Lee-Schmidt: the underrated value of play at work.

In a session at the Charter Workplace Summit earlier this year, Lee explained that even small tweaks to the way work is done—like using a silly icebreaker, such as competing for the goofiest, most elaborate Zoom high-five, to kick off a meeting—can help cultivate the three components of play, which also describe a healthy, effective working environment:

1️⃣ is psychological safety, which makes workers more willing “to propose wild ideas, to challenge the status quo.” 2️⃣ is a feeling of agency: “Can you change the game? Does your being there influence the outcome?” 3️⃣ is a sense of joy: “Without something that appeals to you on an emotional level, you can’t sustain what you’re doing.”

As we spend this next week unwinding from the past year and mentally preparing for the next, it's worth thinking through how to bring those three elements into our workplaces in a more intentional way. Here's to more play in 2024!
