Highlights
Today’s legislative agenda in the King’s Speech starts to pave the way for the Government to deliver against its mission of economic growth, including placing the establishment of an Industrial Strategy Council in statute.
This will be welcomed by business leaders, who told us in our recent Framework for Growth research that an industrial strategy is critical to economic growth, and they will now be looking to government to address the detail of the strategy with the same level of urgency we are seeing across other announcements.
The UK lags behind other G7 economies - losing £90 billion in GDP in 2023 because we hadn’t returned to our 2009-2019 growth trend. To have a meaningful role in developing the solution, we carried out an extensive survey involving more than 1200 of the UK’s senior business decision-makers as well as interviewing over 60 business leaders from across the UK’s regions and sectors, about the components for growth they believed to be most important.
With industrial policy at the heart of the new Government’s growth plans, eight in ten (81%) UK business leaders say an industrial strategy is essential for economic growth, and they placed skills, education and talent as the number one lever to drive growth. We're pleased our research is helping to inform the national conversations about how we can help drive economic growth in the UK.
