I'm headed to Houston in a couple of weeks for the inaugural Houston Climate & Energy Week, Sept 9-13. Excited to see my hometown putting this together! Anyone else I know going?

Are you the caretaker of a climate bomb?

Most people are, and many are responsible for several, without even knowing it. Until relatively recently, I didn't realize I was.

The 12 lbs of HFC refrigerant in my brand new 'energy efficient' AC system I bought for my home last year (if it leaks or is improperly disposed of at end-of-life, which happens today with 80% of residential refrigerant!) will be the equivalent of nearly my entire year of CO2e emissions when it does eventually leak.

And the two canisters that my AC repair guy pumped into my old unit last year, to 'see if that fixes the problem,' had the effect of pumping the equivalent of 20+ tons of CO2 into the atmosphere... when both of course ended up leaking out. This more than doubled my footprint last year, without my even realizing it.

We thankfully have, and are developing new HVAC technologies that don't rely on high global-warming-potential gases! These can't come to scale fast enough. Until then, it's important 1) we're all aware we're sitting on climate bombs all around us, and 2) that we put pressure on the people who can make responsible end-of-life, permanent destruction of these gases happen.

And if, like me, refrigerant has leaked on your watch, let's talk about how you might help support Tradewater's work to prevent that from happening again, and put an end to this problem!
