I’m happy to share that I’ve started a new position as Corporate Development and Partnerships at Wreaths Across America!

As the son of a United States Marine Corps and as a US Army veteran myself, I could not think of a more important mission than to honor our fallen and support their families.

If you or someone you know is a veteran, small business, corporation or non-profit, reach out to me to learn how we can support each other.

I've been offline for a minute, and I'm more than OK with it.

I was in need of a very long social media pause. Networking online and collaborating with folks is great, but it became a bit much for me, personally.

As I came home from my deployment to Iraq in 2017, I swore to myself to start minimizing my online footprint, but found myself working for the City of Philadelphia and needed to develop my network to expand reach and foster (potential) collaboration.

Since then, I've grown beyond social media and exercised my networking muscles despite my own challenges in transition from the US Army (it was a combo of anxiety, depression, PTSD and awkwardness of what to talk about if it wasn't military or veteran-related).

Anyway, flash forward to just a few weeks ago, my former soldier and brother Dakota Kravelick reached out asking how he could develop his own network. Below are some tips that worked (and didn't work) for me. Hopefully it could help some folks out there, and feel free to add more of your own in the comments below.

  1. LinkedIn - connect with as many people with similar interests or those who align with your priorities. Do it as often as possible and do it consistently. I'm personally not a fan of doing this as much anymore because it requires just So. Much. Damn. Time. and you really have to put in the effort to build relationships, not just connect with them.

  2. Community - get involved with local community engagement and service organizations. This could be your local VFW, American Legion, or rotary club. Also, newer, larger national non-profit veteran serving organizations, like Team Red, White & Blue, Team Rubicon, The Mission Continues, IVMF BunkerLabs, and the Travis Manion Foundation.

  3. Region-specific organizations - connect with them, especially because they are hyperlocal and fill the needs of your direct community.

  4. County and State organizations - there are an infinite number of committees and advisory boards to serve on. Some more formal than others, but this is in my experience will expand your reach faster. Don't get me wrong, you still have to do the work, but it's a good way to connect with people / orgs at scale.

  5. Networking events - go to all of them.

  6. Volunteer for everything.

All of this takes so much time and energy. If you do any or all of the above, you have to pace yourself and take a break when you need it.

Combine all of the above and you have the formula for what I did when I worked for Philly.

Above all else, this takes work. So, connect, but don't forget to grind it out.
