Happy #latinxheritagemonth! Some of you may not know me personally and may be recent connections so I thought I would take the time during Latinx Heritage Month to re-introduce myself.
I'm Carlos and I am the son of Central American immigrants. I am the youngest of two siblings. My family is from El Salvador and made the trek from their home country to California in the 70s to pursue a better life for their children. Shortly after, I was born in Palo Alto, CA. For some of your fellow Latinx colleagues, like myself, they may be the first generation in their family to live in the United States and for many more, the first generation to work in technology. Our collective families have all come a long way.
For the last fourteen years I have pursued various roles across different technology organizations, most recently working as a Senior Systems Administrator at Casper. My mother was instrumental in my pursuit of systems administration and systems engineering. “You should get into the technology industry. We are becoming more dependent on computers for everything!” she would say. As I dive deeper into different technical domains like cloud engineering, network engineering and DevOps, I now know how incredibly accurate her statement truly was.
I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the hard work of the #latinxintech community at large and my fellow Latinx colleagues that I have had the pleasure to work with. We’ve come a long way and we are just getting started. For anyone interested in becoming more involved with other Latinx people in tech, take a look at Techqueria. I’ve found so much motivation and inspiration from this Slack community of wonderful people! Happy to share that I passed the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator exam yesterday! I have now reached a long term learning goal and certification milestone: All foundational and associate level AWS certifications have now been cleared!
The SysOps exam covers a wide range of AWS services and focuses on different approaches to day to day operations. Diving deeper into EC2, S3, VPC and different approaches to security and compliance has been invaluable!
Many thanks to my instructor Stéphane Maarek as well as Jon Bonso for the excellent study material as always. Working on a highly collaborative and talented team at Casper has also assisted in keeping motivated and inspired. Studying has assisted in applying these skills in real world scenarios.
