Executive Director of Independent Diplomat, writer, commentator
Carne Ross is a former senior British diplomat and the founder of Independent Diplomat, a non-profit diplomatic advisory group.12 He served in the British Foreign Office for 15 years, holding various positions including speechwriter to the Foreign Secretary and First Secretary (Political) at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York.4
Ross resigned from the British diplomatic service in 2004 after giving secret evidence to an official inquiry into the Iraq War.23 His testimony stated that the British government had exaggerated the threat from Iraq and ignored available alternatives to war.2
After his resignation, Ross founded Independent Diplomat in 2004 to address what he calls the "diplomatic deficit" in international relations.3 The organization aims to assist marginalized governments and political groups in navigating complex diplomatic processes.12
Ross is also an author, having written books such as "Independent Diplomat: Dispatches from an Unaccountable Elite" and "The Leaderless Revolution".3 He has been recognized for his work, receiving the Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2013.4
As of February 2025, Ross is no longer the Executive Director of Independent Diplomat, having stepped down from the position on June 1, 2020. He agreed to stay on as a part-time Senior Advisor for a year to support the transition.5
