New: I spoke with California State Senator Scott Wiener about #SB1047, the AI safety bill that much of Silicon Valley is currently revolting against.

My first question: How did this bill get so controversial?

"Any time you’re trying to regulate any industry in any way, even in a light-touch way—which, this legislation is light-touch—you’re going to get pushback. And particularly with the tech industry. This is an industry that has gotten very, very accustomed to not being regulated in the public interest. And I say this as someone who has been a supporter of the technology industry in San Francisco for many years; I’m not in any way anti-tech. But we also have to be mindful of public interest."

I also asked him whether he really believes that AI could someday create and use nuclear weapons. Read the rest of our conversation on The Atlantic:

Meet Hot Jesus. He is AI-generated. And he is all over Facebook.

For The Atlantic, I wrote about how these bizarre images, and how they relate to AI's bigger hotness problem. But Hot Jesus isn't solely an AI issue, either; he builds on more than a century of American evangelical iconography portraying as him aggressively muscular.

This is a weird one. (Unpaywalled link!)
