The similarities of Colorado's O&G well remediation challenges to space are stark - risks that the economic output of such infrastructure is insufficient (or allocated improperly) to counter their negative environmental consequences. Private satellite operators have argued that de-orbiting non-functional satellites is too expensive for their bottom lines, but like with these thousands of wells in my home state, accepting that as unalterable fact could harm their entire ecosystem and cost taxpayers money to do the final cleanup. Yes we must reduce the price of end-of-life servicing, but ultimately, we should only launch commercial satellites that we know we can afford to responsibly remove at end-of-life.

Public discussion around space powers typically focuses on the pursuit of national security or hegemonic objectives - but economic strength and impact across global society are just as much of a reason to engage in space. Luxembourg has been an industry force for decades by anchoring in commercial satellite activities supported by government policy and investment.

Thank you to the Luxembourg Space Agency & Luxembourg American Chamber of Commerce for inviting me to discuss the economic dynamics of an in-space economy and potential benefits we can capture from this domain, and for your leadership in making the space economy an extension of the terrestrial one. Great as well to meet H.R.H. Crown Prince Guillaume and Consul General Paul Steinmetz!

Main takeaways from our discussion and the day's activities ⤵

  • slowdown in VC activity is not a surprise, nor will it be the new status quo; the right companies can find funding
  • there is no in-space economy today, but we can and are building the infrastructure to enable it
  • please can we agree on a mission authorization framework
  • business plans, business plans, business plans (that are realistic)

Huge thanks to the organization from Juliette Pertuy Mathias Link & Kıvanç Ergu, PhD to make this a productive day!
