Highlights
“Which channels should we choose?”
An early-stage B2C with a #B2B pivot looking to build #brandawareness asked.
🛑A common question but starting here—especially with zero presence—is why #brandmarketing flops.
Here’s how to approach it instead:
1️⃣START WITH BUSINESS GOALS No goals? No direction. Whether it’s building brand awareness or improving retention, you need SMART goals. They guide every decision and prevent random acts of marketing.
2️⃣DEFINE YOUR AUDIENCE Look to your goals. If you’re targeting a new audience, you’d exclude customers. Be specific about the profile you’re after and the specific use-case(s) your brand addresses for people like them.
A cybersecurity startup I was once consulted for started by targeting generic IT Pros. It was as effective as not having a target at all. So, we niched down—CISOs accountable for security vulnerability risk management struggling with insights that help to prioritize remediation efforts—and saw higher quality site traffic and handraisers (+15% CVR).
Beyond titles and firmographics, dig into behaviors, preferences, awareness, and active channels. Truly grasp who/where they are for a more informed plan.
3️⃣CRAFT A NARRATIVE THAT LANDS Your brand story must hit home. Not too broad that it fails to hook in anyone or in-the-weeds that it misses those it should reach.
When leading vendor marketing for a wedding marketplace, we spotted the growing trend for intimate weekday weddings, a sharp contrast to the traditional weekend celebration. We crafted a narrative around this shift, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and intimacy as the appeal.
This story not only set us apart; it empowered vendors to adapt their offerings. The result? A 35% increase in off-peak bookings for vendors and our brand sentiment/awareness spiked during peak wedding season.
So, make sure your narrative ties in a compelling insight you can connect to your audience’s needs (that also shows credibility for your brand).
4️⃣CHOOSE THE RIGHT TACTICS With your goals, audience, and narrative in place, select touchpoints with #POETIC—Paid, Owned, Earned, Teamwork, Interactive, Community.
When we launched flexible office leases for a prop-tech targeting startup founders and remote companies, rather than investing in just “table stakes” channels, we integrated guerrilla tactics, targeted broker-dealers, partner marketing and high-impact community events. We became a “lovable brand” and saw 1.5X more pipeline coverage generated than projected.
5️⃣SECURE BUY-IN A great strategy needs support. Get a brief together covering goals, audience, narrative, competitive context, investment, channels/reasons why, and impact.
This helps address objections (especially around channels/ROI) and secure buy-in, even from skeptics.
BOTTOM LINE: ❌Don’t start brand marketing with channels. ✅Go through these 5-steps for a solid foundation.
